Cette semaine, nous nous intéresserons à l’un des shonen les plus populaires et importants de l’histoire du manga : One Piece par Eiichiro Oda !

Synopsis : 

L’histoire de One Piece commence lorsque le “Roi des Pirates” Gol D.Roger, qui attend son exécution, révèle à la foule que la personne qui découvrira son plus grand trésor, le “One Piece” obtiendra “richesse, célébrité et gloire éternelle”. Ses derniers mots ont capturé les cœurs d’un nombre incalculable de personnes et ont donné le coup d’envoi au Grand Âge des Pirates – au grand désespoir du gouvernement mondial. Ses derniers mots sont une promesse, un coup de clairon mais également une lueur d’espoir pour les millions qui sont à la recherche du One Piece.

Entre en scène Monkey D. Luffy, un jeune homme qui rêve de devenir le prochain Roi des Pirates. Avec une détermination sans bornes et un amour inconditionnel pour l’aventure, Luffy s’est lancé dans cette odyssée et a formé en chemin les Pirates du Chapeau de Paille (mugiwara), un équipage assez excentrique comprenant des personnages possédant leurs propres rêves grandioses. 

Le monde de One Piece est dangereux, rempli de monstres sanguinaires, doté d’une géographie parfois peu accueillante et éprouvante ainsi que de personnages dotés de capacités surhumaines données par les “fruits du démon”. Notre héros Luffy a mangé le fruit “gum gum” (gomu gomu nomi) qui a donné à son corps les propriétés du caoutchouc. Face aux challenges, Luffy et ses amis se battent pour réaliser leurs rêves mais également les uns pour les autres. Depuis plus de vingt ans maintenant, des millions de lecteurs suivent les aventures de l’équipage du Chapeau de Paille.

Avis : 

En tant que fervent lecteur de One Piece, Je crois que la beauté de l’histoire peut être résumée en trois choses : l’élaboration d’un univers inédit, les personnages et la narration. 

Au commencement, les lecteurs sont mis au courant des objectifs et des complexités du monde de One Piece. La planète est divisée en quatre mers, séparées par un large continent (la Red Line) qui encercle le globe. Les subtilités géographiques et politiques combinées à la recherche d’un trésor tant convoité ont conduit Luffy et ses amis sur les territoires les plus étranges de leur planète. Du royaume désert d’Alabasta aux nuages ensoleillés de Sky Island, ou bien encore de l’île submergée de Fishman Island à un éléphant ambulant portant le royaume de Zou, les personnages ont exploré des lieux dont il est difficile d’imaginer qu’ils sont sur la même planète. L’attention au détail et les informations qui ne cessent de s’étoffer définissant le travail acharné d’Oda, permettent aux lecteurs d’avoir la réelle impression de voyager à bord de l’équipage des Chapeaux de Paille ; alors que les personnages en apprennent de plus en plus sur leur monde, le lecteur également. 

Avec un si grand monde, One Piece est rempli d’une grande quantité de personnages excentriques et colorés qui restent néanmoins pertinents dans l’histoire. Plusieurs personnages, dont certains ont pu avoir l’air farfelu voire niais au premier abord, peuvent cacher une histoire émouvante et inoubliable. De plus, Oda réussit à lier plusieurs personnages entre eux. Par exemple, un personnage introduit dans l’histoire 200 chapitres plus tôt (il y a donc à peu près quatre ans), peut s’avérer crucial pour la narration en cours. 

One Piece est parfois critiqué pour sa longueur. Ces critiques ont tort. Avec une construction longue, les lecteurs bénéficient d’une expérience riche. Oda a tendance à commencer un nouvel arc avec de nombreux éléments qui peuvent ne pas avoir de liens avec l’histoire ou nos personnages principaux. Cependant, alors que l’aventure progresse, ces éléments s’assemblent et donnent au lecteur une conclusion des plus satisfaisantes. Étant donné que chaque arc étant plutôt long et complexe, contribue activement à la construction de la fin de l’histoire, l’intérêt pour One Piece n’a cessé de grandir depuis maintenant 23 ans.

Pour conclure : 

Commencé en 1997, One Piece fait partie de la vie de ses lecteurs assidus. La popularité indéfectible de cette histoire est une preuve du dévouement et de l’amour d’Oda pour son travail. En tant que fervent lecteur, je pense que ce manga transmet de belles valeurs qui permettent de s’améliorer en tant qu’individu. Lire le manga en entier peut être un challenge, mais la finalité en vaudra le coup. Allez y jeter un coup d’œil !

His final words captured the hearts of countless individuals and exemplified the zeitgeist of the pirate age, ushering in the Great Age of Pirates – much to the World Government’s chagrin. His last words were a promise, a clarion call, and a good-humored command all in one for the millions seeking to find the One Piece. 

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with a dream to become the next Pirate King. With an unyielding determination and a boundless love for adventures, Luffy answered the call to his journey and along the way, formed the Strawhat Pirates, an eccentric crew made up of characters with their own grandiose dreams. 

The world of One Piece is a dangerous one, filled with murderous beasts, inhospitable geographical challenges, and humans granted with superhuman abilities due to the “devil fruits”. Our hero Luffy ate the “gum gum” fruit, which gives his body the properties of rubber. In the face of the challenges, Luffy and his friends fight on for their dreams and for each other. For more than twenty years now, millions of readers have followed the Strawhat Pirates’ journey. 

Review :

As an avid reader of One Piece, I believe that the beauty of the story can be summarized into three things: the worldbuilding, the characters, and the storytelling.

At the outset, readers were made aware of the scope and complexities of the One Piece world. The planet is split into four seas, separated by a large continent (the Red Line) that circles the globe. The intricacies of geography and politics, combined with the necessity to search for a long-sought treasure, have taken Luffy and his friends to some of the strangest lands on their planet. From the desert kingdom of Alabasta to the sunny clouds of Sky Island, from the underwater Fishman Island to a literal giant walking elephant carrying the Zou Kingdom, the characters have explored lands that one cannot even believe are on the same planet. The attention to detail and the fleshed out lore that Oda has put into his work make the readers feel like they are traveling along with the Strawhat Pirates: as the Strawhats learn more and more about the world, so too do the readers.

With such a huge world, One Piece is filled with tons of eccentric and colorful characters that stay relevant to the story. Many of the characters, some of whom might seem wacky and goofy looking at first, will eventually be revealed to have tear jerking and unforgettable backstories. Furthermore, Oda manages to tie many of the characters together. For example, a character that was introduced 200 chapters ago (up to 4 years ago)  might turn out to be critical to the current storyline. 

One Piece is sometimes criticized for being too long. Those critics are wrong. With a long build-up, the readers usually get a big pay-off. Oda tends to start a new arc with numerous elements that might not have any connection to the story or to our main characters. However, as the journey progresses, these elements eventually piece together and give the readers a satisfying conclusion. Given that each very story arc itself  is actually a long and complex build up for the finale of the story, the hype has also been building for the last 23 years.  

To conclude :

Started in 1997, One Piece has been an integral part of many readers’ lives. The story’s everlasting popularity is a testament to Oda’s dedication and love for his work. As an avid reader, I think people can learn a lot about becoming a better person by reading One Piece. Reading the entire thing can be a challenge, but it will be worth it in the end. Check it out!
